A meteorite struck just north of the South African border on Saturday night, with people as far away as Mahikeng and Lichtenburg seeing the accompanying flash of light.

The meteorite made landfall in Botswana at approximately 6.40pm on Saturday evening. A near-Earth observation program discovered the object just eight hours before it made contact with the earth. Residents of Ottosdal in the North West province reported seeing a bright flash of light.

CCTV footage of the meteorite was handed over to central South African radio station on Sunday evening.
