Today marks a historic new chapter for South Africa. The Democratic Alliance (DA) and the African National Congress (ANC), along with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), have signed an agreement to form a Government of National Unity (GNU).

Senior DA negotiator Helen Zille announced this deal, highlighting that it emerged from two weeks of intense but mature negotiations.
In a letter to the public, John Steenhuisen, DA leader, emphasised the significance of this agreement, stating, ‘The statement that emerges from the past two weeks of intense but mature negotiations charts a new course for our nation.’
At the heart of the GNU statement is a shared respect for, and defence of, the Constitution and the rule of law. This agreement commits the GNU to rapid economic growth, job creation, and strengthening law enforcement agencies to address crime, corruption, and gender-based violence.
Steenhuisen added, ‘From today, the DA will co-govern the Republic of South Africa, in a spirit of unity and collaboration.’
The DA will now bring its track record of clean and accountable governance to serve all South Africans, stepping up to contribute in various leadership roles within the national Cabinet, National Assembly, and the National Council of Provinces.
