The shooting incident comes exactly a month after rival taxi associations Codeta and Cata came to an agreement over the B97 route between Bellville and Mbekweni in Paarl. More than 80 people have already been killed due to taxi violence since the beginning of the year.
Meanwhile, as Cape Town police are investigating the incident, Philippi police are following up on leads surrounding the death of a Cape Town school teacher that was shot and killed on Tuesday, September 21. The 53-year-old, Thulani Manqoyi, was shot dead while sitting in his vehicle at the Heinz Park Primary School grounds.
In the meantime Democratic Alliance’s (DA) spokesperson on education in the Western Cape, Lorraine Botha has called on the SAPS to conduct a thorough investigation into this crime and appeal to residents to play their part by cooperating with the police.
“Anyone with information on this crime should immediately report it at their nearest police station, or provide an anonymous tip-off by calling 08600 10111,” Botha said.
Botha also went on to say that she will be holding SAPS accountable by submitting parliamentary questions for updates on the investigation, as she will also write to the MEC for Community Safety, Albert Fritz, to request his Department’s Court Watching Brief Unit to monitor this case for any policing inefficiencies that may hamper justice being achieved.
“We further welcome the support provided by the Western Cape Education Department, which has made available counselling services for both staff and learners. These events are deeply traumatising and the provision of such counselling services goes a long way in taking the first steps towards healing,” Botha added.
