The founder of the luxury goods holding company ‘Richemont’ surpassed Aliko Dangote, from Nigeria, to become the richest person in the African continent.

Rupert, who is both founder and chair of Richemont, recently took the place of the Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote as Africa’s richest person.
Primedia, reports that Rupert’s net worth now rests at R270 billion where Dangote’s fortune has decreased to R253 billion. This is due to Nigeria’s depreciating currency, increase in inflation as well as political unrest within the country.

This year, Rupert’s wealth increased by an estimated R36 billion, which reflects the strong performance of Richemont.
Richemont is well-known for brands such as Jaeger-LeCoultre and Cartier.
As it stands, Rupert has now become the 147th richest person in the world.

Through organisations such as the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, the SA College for Tourism and Ikamva Labantu, the Rupert family has managed to aid multiple educational and environmental undertakings.
