Widespread relief was felt by Saldanha Bay locals after the kidnapping trial of Joshlin Smith was transferred to the victim’s hometown by the Western Cape High Court, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Wednesday, 19 February 2025, marked the first anniversary of the six-year-old’s disappearance.
To date and despite extensive searches, Joshlin remains missing.
During the pre-trial appearance, which took place earlier today on Friday, 21 February 2025, relevant representatives were informed that Smith’s trial would be conducted at the Multipurpose Centre in Saldanha Bay.
According to IOL, Joshlin’s matter was originally scheduled for pre-trial on Friday, 28 February 2025.
Owing to the nature of the case, the matter was expedited.
During the pre-trial, it was confirmed that the trial will be hosted in a community centre, which will serve as a makeshift sitting of the high court.
The transfer of the matter will allow for community members to attend the hearing, to be conducted by Judge Nathan Erasmus.
As it stands, the three accused, namely Joshlin’s mother, Kelly Smith; her boyfriend, Jacquen Appollis; and Steveno van Rhyn, are facing charges of kidnapping and trafficking in persons for exploitation.
The trio will stand trial from 3 March to 28 March 2025.
Joshlin’s mother was being held in Pollsmoor Prison and will now be transferred to Malmesbury Prison, a location in closer proximity to the community centre turned court.
Appollis and Van Rhyn are being held at Malmesbury Prison after their request to be transferred to Cape Town was denied, reports EWN.
