Cape Town has asked SANRAL and the provincial government to put up barrier walls along the N2 to stop attacks on drivers and passengers. Safety and Security MMC JP Smith made the call at a safety deployment near Borcherds Quarry on 2 October 2025, Cape {town} Etc reports.
According to EWN, the City has sent 44 extra police and traffic officers to patrol this part of the highway to make the road feel safer and help crews reach people who need assistance more quickly.
BizNews reports that the request follows an attack in July near Borcherds Quarry when a concrete block was thrown at a car, injuring the driver. Many people who use the N2 say they now worry about travelling the route.

Smith said the City urgently needs to implement two things: more officers on the ground and stronger engineering on the road. He asked SANRAL to restore fences on the road reserve so people cannot enter the freeway area.
‘This solution needs to come from an operational side and an engineering side,’ he said.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis asked SANRAL to keep freeway cameras working all the time so police and City teams can spot stranded motorists and promptly respond.
Local news outlets and community groups have shared videos and first-hand accounts that show how dangerous the attacks can be and why residents want quick and lasting action.
