After two dominant wins on home soil, South Africa’s junior side looked to have done enough to finally claim the U20 Rugby Championship crown, a title that has somehow slipped through their fingers for years. But just as celebrations began, the maths stepped in to complicate things.
The South Africa national under-20 rugby team, better known as the Junior Boks, have been the standout team of the 2026 tournament so far, racking up 10 log points after dismantling Argentina 48–21 and brushing aside Australia 56–17 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
On paper, it looked done. In reality, it’s not quite over.
The confusion started when South African Rugby Union declared the team champions on Sunday night, releasing a statement on their website that read:
‘The Junior Springboks clinched the 2026 Under-20 Rugby Championship in emphatic fashion on Sunday evening, overpowering Australia U20 56–17 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha to seal the title with a game to spare.’
But by Monday, that certainty had faded.
Tournament organisers, SANZAAR, appear to have reverted to the traditional bonus point system, awarding a point for scoring four tries, rather than the more recent variation used in previous editions, as reported by the Daily Maverick.
It’s a small technical detail, but one with big consequences. And crucially, it wasn’t clearly communicated.
As things stand, both the New Zealand national under-20 rugby team and the Argentina national under-20 rugby team remain mathematically in the hunt.
New Zealand sit on five points after edging Australia 34–29, while Argentina also have five after beating New Zealand 25–17 with a four-try performance that earned them a bonus point.
That leaves a narrow, and somewhat unlikely, path for either side to snatch the title away from South Africa.
For the Baby Blacks, the equation is dramatic but possible. They would need to beat the Junior Boks in the final round, secure a bonus point, and deny South Africa even a losing bonus point.
It’s a scenario that would overturn a significant points gap, currently sitting at a hefty 69-point differential, but tournament rules prioritise head-to-head results over points difference, keeping their hopes alive.

Argentina’s chances are even slimmer, requiring a big win over Australia while also relying on New Zealand to upset South Africa under very specific conditions.
Back home, the mood has shifted from celebration to cautious focus.
SARU has since walked back its earlier announcement, clarifying that the Junior Boks have ‘all but clinched’ the title, a subtle but important difference.
And if anything, the unexpected twist may serve as the perfect reset before the final clash.
Historically, South Africa’s U20 side has often been competitive but inconsistent in closing out tournaments like this. That’s what makes this campaign feel different. The performances have been clinical, the margins convincing, and the depth of talent evident.
From a local perspective, there’s also a sense of pride in seeing the next generation step up, especially on home soil. Gqeberha has played host to a team that looks not just capable, but composed under pressure.
Now, it all comes down to one last push.
The Junior Boks need just a single bonus point in their final match against New Zealand on Saturday, 9 May, to remove any doubt and officially secure the title.
It’s a manageable task, but rugby has a way of reminding teams that nothing is guaranteed until the final whistle.
So while the celebrations may have started early, the job isn’t quite finished.
And in a twist few expected, the final chapter of this tournament might just be its most important.
