On Sunday evening, six inmates escaped from Pollsmoor Prison in Steenberg Road, Tokai. A manhunt ensued shortly after they fled, with Police Services reportedly ‘hot on the heels’ of the inmates.

The convicted criminals broke free after removing security bars with a piece of metal obtained by breaking one of the beds in the prison’s Medium B facility. Of the six escapees, one is serving 12 years for attempted murder. The other five men are are serving time for petty crimes.

According to the Department of Correctional Services, an internal investigation has been launched to establish the exact details of how they broke out.

Correctional Services together with South African Police Services have launched a wide spread search, resulting in three of the intimates being apprehended on Monday afternoon.

Police urged the public not to engage with the escapees if spotted, but to rather report the sighting to the nearest police station, as there are still three remaining inmates at large
