Two young boys lost their lives on Tuesday night after a fire tore through their home in Town 2, Khayelitsha, during Cape Town’s latest cold front.
Cape Town was battered by gale-force winds as the cold front swept across the metro, raising the risk of fires spreading rapidly in vulnerable areas.
At 9:30pm, emergency services were alerted to the blaze, with fire crews from both Khayelitsha and Lansdowne rushing to the scene, as per Smile FM. Despite their swift response, the structure was already engulfed in flames.
By 11pm, the fire had been brought under control, but it was too late. Underneath the debris, firefighters discovered the bodies of two boys, aged just 4 and 7, both bearing fatal burn wounds.
This is the second child-related fire tragedy in the metro. Earlier this month, in Wallacedene near Kraaifontein, a six-year-old girl perished in another shack fire.
As investigations continue, many are calling on authorities to step up fire prevention efforts, especially in high-density and wind-prone areas like Khayelitsha.
