Early morning travellers passing through Cape Town’s main aviation hub encountered an unusual start to the day after a power disruption forced the airport to switch to generator supply this morning, Cape {town} Etc reports.
In a public notice shared by Cape Town International Airport via social media, airport management confirmed the facility had moved onto backup power while technicians worked to restore electricity to the broader network.
‘Please be advised that Cape Town International Airport is currently running on generator power due to a power outage. There is minimal operational impact, and our airport staff will be available to assist where needed. We apologise for any inconvenience caused,’ the airport said.
The update reassured passengers that essential services remained functional, with staff deployed across terminals to assist travellers navigating the temporary disruption.
Meanwhile, additional details emerging through a reporting by Smile FM traced the outage to an unexpected source: kites entangled in high-voltage power lines.
Eskom indicated the incident occurred around 3:50am, prompting emergency repairs after electricity supply was interrupted across nearby industrial zones, residential areas and infrastructure linked to airport operations.
Restoration of the power is projected for later this morning at 10:30am , with technicians dispatched immediately after the fault was identified.
The utility also issued a safety warning, urging parents and guardians to keep children away from electrical infrastructure.
Flying objects near power lines, Eskom cautioned, pose serious risks and are considered both dangerous and unlawful.
Residents were further advised to treat all electrical installations as live until power had been fully restored.
