Valjean Jackman was granted R5 000 bail in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 10 December, after he was accused of fatally shooting a security officer following a car crash in Milnerton, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The car crash occurred along Malibongwe Drive near Dunoon on Sunday, 1 December, as reported by IOL.
The State has alleged that Jackman (45) attempted to flee the scene after the crash and after security officers in the vicinity gave chase, he allegedly started shooting at one of the security guards.
Jackman was subsequently arrested, after metro police assisted in the matter, according to News24.
He made his first appearance in court on Wednesday, 4 December, and charged with one count of murder.
‘The accused was involved in an accident and then he ran away, he was chased by security guards. He took out his firearm and shot at the victim. He was arrested at the scene by security guards,’ according to the State.
Jackman was taken to Panorama Hospital but had ‘no money on his person’. His lawyer had previously asked the court to allow him to stay at Milnerton police station as he still needed medical treatment.
In addition, Jackman’s lawyer stated that the firearm the accused had used was licensed.
His lawyer had also argued that Jackman was assaulted and claimed that dogs were released on him, as he was being arrested.
While the State categorised Jackman’s offence as Schedule 5, a serious crime, it did not oppose the R5 000 bail, which was proposed by Jackman’s defence.
Strict bail conditions were also imposed by the court, in which Jackman had to surrender his passport, stay away from the Milnerton area, and report to the Kraaifontein police station on every Monday.
