Several unconfirmed reports are speculating that the reason for Lloyd’s exit is due to Anita Lloyd’s comments on the show. On the show, she claimed to worship Mammon, the god of money. ‘We all worship Mammon, the god of money. If I didn’t have any money, I’d jump from a building. Being poor is really bad.’
In a statement, KWV told Cape {town} Etc that Lloyd resigned from his position as CEO in August 2022 and that no circumstances of dismissal or forced resignation were involved in his replacement. ‘[His stepping down] marked the end of his successful tenure of over six years at the helm of KWV. This decision paved the way for the appointment of the incumbent CEO, John Loomes. It is important to clarify that there were no circumstances of dismissal or forced resignation involved in this transition. Mr Lloyd’s graciousness in staying on as the outgoing CEO ensured a seamless transition and smooth handover. KWV acknowledges and appreciates Mr Lloyd’s significant contributions to the company during his time with KWV. Anita Lloyd’s involvement in the reality show has no bearing on the decision to promote the new CEO.’
Lloyd will be replaced by John Loomes as of 1 June.
Loomes has been serving as the CEO incumbent in a temporary COO role since September last year and was responsible for most functions and reporting lines. In January, his responsibilities were expanded, and he has been managing the business for the past five months.
‘Working at an iconic South African company such as KWV is a tremendous opportunity,’ says Loomes. ‘As COO, I’ve gained an in-depth understanding of the entire business, both locally and internationally, and solidified my commitment to driving KWV’s success and growth.’
Lloyd is confident in Loomes’ ability to manage the South African wine and spirits producer. ‘John is a highly respected leader who has already played a significant role in KWV’s growth,’ he says. ‘I’m confident that under his guidance, KWV will continue to thrive and succeed. His commitment to quality, innovation and exceptional customer service will ensure that KWV remains a company that consumers and customers can trust.’
