Members of the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement Anti Land Invasion Unit helped a young mother give birth to a baby girl on Voortrekker Road on Wednesday, October, 28.

The officers were on duty in the Elsies River area at approximately 1.30pm when members of the public notified them of a young woman who was in distress on the corner of Halt and Voortrekker road.

When the officers approached the woman they noticed that she was already in labour and in the process of giving birth.

The mother of the woman in labour was also on the scene and the officers worked with her to safely deliver the baby girl.

The City released a statement which said that the officers are extremely proud to have assisted in the birth of the baby girl and they said that delivering a child at a busy intersection without any medical assistance or proper tools was a daunting experience.

The officers also wished to thank the grandmother and mother of the child for the calm manner in which they handled the situation.
