An off-duty Law Enforcement Advancement Plan officer has died in hospital after he was hijacked, stabbed and pelted with stones in Philippi East, the City confirmed on today, reports Cape {town} Etc.
City officials and colleagues found the 26-year-old officer after his vehicle was discovered abandoned in Sheffield Road. He had tried to flee into the Marikana informal settlement when the attackers struck, according to the City’s account (Smile 90.4FM).
Law enforcement arrested one suspect in connection with the attack, a second suspect remains at large.
The Safety and Security Directorate said it would use all available resources to investigate the case and bring those responsible to justice, and colleagues have paid tribute to the officer’s service.
LEAP officers are deployed across several Cape Town precincts to support community safety efforts, including in Philippi East, where informal settlements such as Marikana face longstanding service and safety challenges. The City urged anyone with information to contact Philippi East police or the City tip-off lines.
