Len Cloete, the man shot in the head by police at a lodge has reportedly not made as solid a recovery as proposed a few months ago.
The infamous shooting occurred in November last year, with a viral video depicting the scene. It shone a striking spotlight on both the irate character of Cloete and the SAPS – igniting a debate as to how police handle conflict.
The altercation took place at the Misty Hills Country Hotel in Muldersdrift and is believed to have been over Cloete’s refusal to leave the premises.
Cloete lay in a coma for roughly a month after being shot, and regained consciousness in December.
Earlier this year, it was believed that he was on the road to recovery after he was able to recognise his wife and rehabilitation proceedings began shortly thereafter. However, recent updates reveal that the path to recovery does not seem so smooth for him.
Despite being discharged from the hospital earlier this month, Cloete’s condition is still far less than favourable. Luke Enslin, lead investigator at Specialised Security Services noted that his condition was still “very serious” reports IOL. The private security company has taken the case on for further investigation.
Cloete is reportedly unable to talk, and the right side of his body is said to be paralyzed, as per The South African.
According to Lizzy Suping, Independent Police Investigate Directorate, an interview with Cloete is necessary but worries exist that his serious brain damage may hinder him from ever telling his side of the story.
Meanwhile, in a similar incident, the man accused of shooting and killing a cop at New Somerset Hospital was back on the docket yesterday. Here’s what is known about Jean-Paul Malgas’s case:
