As a series of cold fronts make their way towards the Cape, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow level 4 warning for disruptive rain along with warnings for damaging winds and waves, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to SAWS, the series of cold fronts is expected to make landfall on Thursday, Friday and Sunday (3 to 6 July), bringing widespread showers, strong to gale-force winds, choppy sea conditions and very cold temperatures:
- Yellow level 4 warning for disruptive rain
- Yellow level 2 warning for damaging winds
- Yellow level 2 warning for damaging waves
- Advisory for very cold, wet and windy conditions
‘The most significant cold front will reach the south-western Cape by Friday afternoon, where quick and heavy downpours are possible, with another cold front expected on Sunday,’ said SAWS in its Yellow level 4 warning.
‘Four-day rainfall accumulations of 30 to 60mm are likely over the south-western parts, reaching 70 to 90mm over the mountainous region with most of the rainfall expected from Friday into Saturday. Rain-on-rain together with saturated soils will lead to significant impacts.’
In addition to disruptive rains, SAWS issued a Yellow level 2 warning for damaging winds for Friday, 4 July.
‘A cold front is expected to make landfall over western parts of the Western Cape on Friday resulting in strong to gale force winds (60 to 70kph) gusting to 80kph along the south-west coast between Saldanha Bay and Cape Agulhas on Friday,’ said SAWS.
SAWS also issued a Yellow level 2 warning for damaging waves for Saturday to Monday (5 to 7 July).
‘A cold front is expected to make landfall on Friday with a high pressure system ridging in from the west. Another cold front is expected to affect the Western Cape on Sunday,’ said SAWS.
‘This will result in south-westerly waves of 4.5 to 5.5 metres as well as wave periods of 10 to 12 seconds between Cape Agulhas and Plettenberg Bay on Saturday until Monday morning. Windy conditions (40 to 60kph) can also be expected along the south coast.’
