The Western Cape High Court has sentenced two men to life in prison for the cold-blooded murder of a pregnant woman, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Jeremiah Fortuin (42) and Ricardo Cloete (43) were found guilty of the heinous crime that took place on June 21, 2020, when 21-year-old Shahieda Nathan was shot dead in her home on Klipbok Street, Scottsdene, while eight months pregnant.
The senseless violence that erupted that day did not only claim Nathan’s life but also left two other individuals, aged 29 and 37, injured, as they sat in the comfort of her home.
Police reports indicate that the victims were simply enjoying their time together when the assailants forced their way in and opened fire indiscriminately.
Following the incident, the two suspects faced repeated appearances in court, underlining the protracted legal process that ensued.
Bail was successfully opposed against Fortuin, who remained incarcerated, while Cloete initially managed to secure bail at R2000, only to be rearrested for violating the conditions of his release.
Detective Sergeant Christopher Elvin Conradie of the Provincial Organised Crime, Anti-Gang Unit, played a crucial role in the investigation.
His unwavering dedication and thorough collection of evidence ultimately led to the convictions of both men. After an exhaustive trial, they were found guilty of offences including murder, attempted murder, and violations of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act 21 of 1998.
Fortuin received additional charges for possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
On March 17, 2026, the court delivered its sentence: life imprisonment for the murder of Nathan, along with 15 years for each count of attempted murder, and six years for breaching the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
Fortuin received an extra 11 years for his firearm charges, with all sentences running concurrently with the life terms.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General (Adv) Thembisile Patekile, praised the determination of the South African Police Service (SAPS) for their outstanding work, reflecting the commitment of the force to achieving justice in this tragic case.
