In a remarkable display of courage and dedication, the Strandfontein Surf Lifesaving Club (SLC) team showcased their crucial role in emergency response on the evening of 27 January 2026, reports Cape {town} Etc.
At approximately 6:20pm, a head-on collision involving a silver Volkswagen Polo and a white Toyota Avanza occurred on Old Strandfontein Road, leaving 16 passengers—three of whom were children caught in the chaos.
Witnesses described the scene as pandemonium, with injuries ranging from minor to suspected spinal issues among the victims.
The lifeguards were the first responders on the scene, with Lisa Adams and Sanele Mkhasibe acting quickly to extract passengers from the wreckage and assess their injuries. ‘In emergencies, every second counts, and our lifeguards realised immediately that every effort was needed to help those in need,’ said a representative from the Strandfontein SLC.
Struggling to contact emergency services amidst the unfolding crisis, Adams reached out to Senior Lifeguard Luqmaan Naidoo.
He responded without hesitation, mobilising the rest of the Strandfontein SLC team alongside Paul Newman from disaster management.
Upon arrival, the professionalism of the lifeguards was evident. They initiated a thorough assessment and treatment of the victims, prioritising those with the most severe injuries.
Their training and composure were crucial in maintaining control of the situation as a tow truck driver assisted in safely directing traffic around the accident site.
‘We are incredibly proud of our team for their swift, coordinated response. Our lifeguards stepped up when it mattered the most, ensuring all patients received the essential care required until EMS arrived,’ the club proudly stated.
‘Thanks to their quick actions, all individuals involved were stabilised and successfully handed over to EMS,’
