A Lion’s Head rescue on Sunday afternoon ended with a 47-year-old Durban visitor being airlifted to safety after he slipped and injured his ankle on the descent from the popular Cape Town trail, Cape {town} Etc reports.
According to Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) the hiker tried to continue, then called the emergency number 021 937 0300 when he could not go any further.
WSAR said a small team on board the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS and Air Mercy Service helicopter was deployed to assist. Rescue crews hoisted the hiker from the trail, flew him to a nearby landing zone and handed him over for further care.
‘Moments like these highlight the skill, teamwork and dedication of the rescue teams who stand ready to respond when help is needed and the importance of looking out for one another on the trails, WSAR said in an update.
The operation unfolded against the steep, rocky backdrop of Lion’s Head, one of the city’s busiest hiking routes, where a small slip can quickly turn into a rescue.
The helicopter extraction showed how quickly trained crews can reach the mountain and move a patient to a landing zone for onward care. WSAR asks hikers to save 021 937 0300 before heading out, it can make a real difference when a hike ends with an injury instead of a view.
