Hikers may soon need a time slot before chasing golden-hour views. Cape Town’s favourite sunrise spot could soon come with a sunrise Lions Head selfie bookings system, if a new tongue-in-cheek plan for Lion’s Head gets its way, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The proposal would require hikers to reserve timed summit slots before sunrise, with marshals reportedly enforcing a strict two-minute photo limit per person once they reach the top.
Under the booking system, early risers would be encouraged to arrive with ‘fully charged phones, clear intentions and no unnecessary group posing’.
Those who linger too long at the summit could allegedly be forcefully reminded to ‘move along for the next batch of sunrise enthusiasts’.
The proposed initiative has already sparked debate among locals, especially among the city’s dedicated hikers, content creators and enthusiasts who simply enjoy standing still and looking at the view.
Supporters of the bookings system say the idea would help reduce summit crowding and keep the morning flow moving. A local hiker welcomed the idea, saying, ‘If Lion’s Head selfie time slots keep things moving and give everyone a fair chance at the view, I’m all for it.’ Another regular, however, pushed back, adding, “Sunrise is not something you can schedule or rush. These Lion’s Head selfie time slots take away from the whole experience of being up there.’
Critics, however, have questioned whether Cape Town locals could survive a world where a sunrise photo comes with a timer.
The proposal also suggests a dedicated ‘selfie lane’ for visitors who only need one picture and a small ‘reflection zone’ for those still deciding which angle makes the mountain look best.
This, of course, is all in the spirit of April Fools.
For now, Lion’s Head remains open to everyone with sturdy shoes, a good camera and enough breath to make it to the top.
