Load shedding doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon, as the utility company has just announced that Stage 2 load shedding will continue through the week, from 5 am on Monday, November 8 until 5 am on Saturday, November 13.
In a statement released by Eskom, the power utility stated that “events” over the last two days have required extensive use of emergency reserves and have hampered the recovery of the dam levels at the pumped storage power stations, depleting already low diesel levels.
They further indicated that South Africans can expect higher stages of load shedding as the power system remains volatile and unpredictable.
According to spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha, a major incident occurred in Zambia on Saturday that has affected the entire Southern African power pool. Power imported from Cahora Bassa was reduced by 1000 MW while a Tutuka generator also tripped.
Along with this, “on Sunday 7 November, a unit each at Medupi and Matla power stations tripped, ” read the statement.
Total breakdowns currently amount to 16 693MW while planned maintenance is 5 769MW of capacity, as per Eskom.
