This Saturday, 19 October 2024, local lawn bowler Jonathan Cochrane is set to make a remarkable attempt to break the Guinness World Record for playing at the most lawn bowls clubs in a 24-hour period, Cape {town} Etc reports.

Currently holding the record at eight clubs, Cochrane aims to surpass that milestone by playing at ten different venues throughout the day.
During his record attempt, he will play five ends (five rounds up and down the green) at each club, beginning in the far south and moving up the peninsula.
His route includes stops at clubs in Bergvliet, Meadowridge, Plumstead, and the Western Province Cricket Club before heading to The Glen, Fresnaye, Sunningdale, Milnerton, and concluding at Edgemead, his home club.
The challenge is not without its difficulties. Jonathan is restricted to using only registered public transport, including Metrorail, Golden Arrow, and MyCiti buses, or travelling on foot. Unlike his predecessor in England, who benefitted from a dense network of public transport, Jonathan will have to navigate the logistical challenges of South Africa’s transportation system.
Starting at the Fish Hoek Bowls Club at 4am, Jonathan’s journey will take him across the city, with a planned finish time of around 6:45pm at Edgemead.
Cape {town} Etc spoke with the aspiring Guinness World Record holder, who shared what inspired him to take on this challenge.
‘Bowls is the best kept secret in sport; anybody can play bowls. Regardless of your disability, race, age, or social background, everybody can play bowls. We don’t get any coverage of bowls in South Africa, so my motivation behind this is to get bowls in South Africa more coverage and more recognition.’
Cochrane has dedicated considerable time and effort to planning this ambitious record attempt, hoping to inspire others in the community.
