A rare sighting of a Cape leopard cup, captured by the Cape Leopard Trust in Overberg, is truly something to celebrate.
The Overberg region in the Western Cape is renowned for many things: beach, sun, incredible holiday spots, and … leopards! The Cape Leopard Trust has been doing some stellar work when it comes to researching this abundant and wild area, ensuring that we get a glimpse into what their large-scale camera survey has managed to capture.
The camera grid spans the region from Botvlei in the west to De Hoop vlei in the east – a total survey area of over 2400 km2 which was operational until the end of 2021. While the survey has now concluded, a few leopards have been recorded at a third of the 86 sites.
These big cats are notoriously elusive creatures with countless would-be explorers packing their bags and heading home with a cloud of disappointment over their heads. However, on 30 January 2022, one of the Trust’s cameras managed to capture a rarity – a Cape leopard cub!
The adorable image shared via their Instagram shows a tiny, yet inquisitive cub walking up to the camera. Curiosity captures the cat? On camera, that is.
The survey has managed to capture some awesome raw footage of the wildlife in the Overberg area.
