On Sunday, 7 September 2025, Cape Town was treated to a breathtaking celestial display as a rare total lunar eclipse bathed the city in a deep red hue.
This event, known as a Blood Moon, was visible across Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia, captivating sky watchers worldwide.
The eclipse began with the partial phase at 6:24pm, with the totality, the moment when the Moon was fully immersed in Earth’s shadow, reaching its peak at 8:11pm.
The entire event lasted approximately 5 hours and 27 minutes, with the total phase enduring for about 82 minutes. During this time, the Moon took on a red glow due to the scattering of sunlight through Earth’s atmosphere.
