A devastating early-morning accident has struck a southbound Rovos Rail journey from Windhoek after part of a bridge gave way near Naute, roughly 285km before Ariamsvlei and the South African border, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:45am on Sunday, 1 March 2026, when the final span of the bridge was washed away. The collapse led to the loss of two locomotives and two utility coaches. The train’s automatic braking system activated immediately, preventing further destruction and averting what could have been an even more catastrophic outcome.
Rovos Rail confirmed, with deep sorrow, that the company’s driver and a TransNamib pilot lost their lives in the accident. The operator extended heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the two men.
Importantly, no passengers or additional Rovos Rail staff members were injured in the derailment.
Emergency arrangements were swiftly implemented to ensure guests could continue their journey safely. Buses have been dispatched to transfer passengers to Upington, where onward flights to Cape Town have been organised. Upon arrival, they will be personally received by Tiffany.
While expressing regret over the tragedy, Rovos Rail emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of its passengers and employees remain its highest priority.
