The Lwandle Library has been forced to close its doors indefinitely following a break-in that occurred over the weekend, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Library staff discovered the aftermath of the attempted burglary when they arrived at work early Monday morning. Perpetrators used an unorthodox method to bypass security, gaining entry through the ceiling.
Once inside, they vandalised the electrical system and damaged crucial water pipes, resulting in substantial flooding.
The incident is not only a blow to the library’s physical assets but also to the community, who rely on its services for education and resources.
An initial damage assessment is currently underway, as City officials evaluate the significant water damage and attempt to restore the electricity. The break-in comes just weeks before a planned renovation project worth nearly R12 million was scheduled to commence, aimed at modernising and enhancing the library’s facilities for the public.
Mayco member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham expressed her disappointment regarding the incident.
‘This incident is incredibly disappointing, especially considering the exciting developments in the pipeline for this library. Apart from the cost to repair the damage to the library, the biggest cost is to the community, who now have to travel much further to access our services, all because of the actions of a few individuals,’ said Higham.

Higham has urged anyone with information about the break-in to report it to the South African Police Service or the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre.
During this period of closure, library patrons are encouraged to visit alternative branches in Strand, Gordon’s Bay, or Somerset West to continue accessing library services.
