RCL Foods said Salmonella was detected in condemned product and warned the pathogen can affect pets and people through contact with saliva or faeces. The group said it has begun co-ordinating with retailers and regulators to locate and remove the batches, and it has appointed independent experts to investigate how condemned stock reached the market.
‘We did not meet our own standards. Our immediate priority is to recall, remove and replace all potentially affected products from circulation,’ RCL Foods chief executive Paul Cruickshank said, apologising to shoppers and pet owners.
At this stage the company said it was not aware of any confirmed illnesses in people or animals. Shoppers who bought the listed batch numbers should return the product to the retailer for a refund or replacement.
