Thousands of runners will take over Cape Town’s streets this weekend as the Cape Town Marathon returns, bringing with it several key road closures and parking restrictions across the city.
The main 42.2km marathon will take place on Sunday, 19 October 2025, with the 10km Peace Run and Trail Run scheduled for Saturday, 18 October 2025.
Motorists are urged to plan ahead, as large parts of the city, including the Atlantic Seaboard, CBD, Woodstock, Salt River, Observatory, Mowbray, Newlands, Claremont and Rondebosch, will be affected.
According to the City of Cape Town, several roads will have no-parking zones marked by cones and fencing, with illegally parked vehicles subject to towing.
Parking restrictions
From 8am on 17 October to 9am on 19 October, parking will be prohibited along key routes such as Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Beach Road, Portswood Drive, Searle Street, Victoria Road, and Main Road (Mowbray to Newlands). Other affected areas include Liesbeek Parkway, Albert Road, Sir Lowry Road, Darling Street, and Adderley Street, among others.
Trail run closures — Saturday, 18 October
Expect temporary delays between 6am and 4pm along Somerset Road, High Level Road, Joubert Road, Ocean View Drive, Springbok Road, and Kloof Nek Road. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes during these hours.
Fun run closures — Saturday, 18 October
From 6am to 10am, Beach Road (between Queens Road and Helen Suzman Boulevard) will be closed in sections, with local access permitted only. Fritz Sonnenberg Road will also be fully closed from 6:30am to 8:30am, with detours in place for nearby residents.
Marathon day closures — Sunday, 19 October
The biggest set of restrictions will be in effect for the main marathon on Sunday. Starting as early as 2am, full and partial closures will affect roads on the Atlantic Seaboard, CBD, Woodstock, Salt River, and Southern Suburbs.

Motorists travelling through the Atlantic Seaboard should note that access to the Waterfront, Granger Bay, and Beach Road will be limited until approximately 2:30pm.
Residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with detour maps and allow extra travel time throughout the weekend. The City has confirmed that public transport, emergency vehicles, and event shuttles will have limited access in certain zones.
The marathon is expected to draw thousands of participants and spectators, adding to Cape Town’s vibrant sporting calendar.
