A 38-year-old man has survived a 40-metre drop off the side of a viewing platform at Howick Falls in KwaZulu-Natal.

ER24 paramedics, the South African Police and another private emergency service all worked tirelessly to rescue the man who was clinging to a branch on a small ledge of the 95-metre cliff face.

The man alleges he was being chased by assailants at 2am on Wednesday, December 30.

The Police cordoned off the area as there were around 30 bystanders wanting to look in on the scene. The SAPS Search and Rescue team arrived and set up a rope system to try and retrieve the man off the ledge.

Upon lowering a medic down to the man they assessed that he has only suffered minor injuries. He was then attached to the medic’s harness and both were lifted back up to the platform. The man was then transported to Northdale hospital for treatment.

The police have opened an investigation into the event, although no details have been released.
