The British man who allegedly stabbed a 5-year-old boy at Waterstone Village Mall in Somerset West was found dead in prison.

“The offender in question was found dead in his cell on the morning of February 27 at about 7.30am in the hospital section,” Department of Correctional Services spokesperson, Simphiwe Xako, said to IOL. “The matter was subsequently reported to the police for investigation. At this stage, the circumstances leading to his death are still not known.”

The deceased, named Mark Hay, was arrested for allegedly stabbing a five-year-old boy at the Waterstone Village shopping centre in Somerset West on Monday, January 14 2019. Western Cape police officials confirmed that a mother was walking through the centre with her two children when the suspected approached them and stabbed one of the children.

Hay faced two counts of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm. He had also allegedly assaulted a 10-year-old girl at the same shopping centre, and had also slapped another young child.

He had not been granted bail, and was remanded as well.

Hay, who was 47-years-old at the time of death, lived in the Heldervue area of Somerset West.
