Johan Steyn was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly drove over a security guard at the De Boord shopping centre in Stellenbosch. CCTV footage shows Steyn driving over Mzwanele Wellem on April 30.

The footage went viral, and Steyn previously indicated he would plead not guilty when appearing in court. He was slapped with an alternative charge, that of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Wellem (39) had only been an employee of the Phangela Group for a month when he was run over by the car, and is now attending physical therapy as part of his recovery.

Steyn now hopes to resolve the matter through mediation. The case was postponed when Magistrate Alaric Amos ruled that it required a regional court decision. This means Steyn will appear in court again on July 12.

As reported by IOL, Steyn’s lawyer Bruce Hendricks said that they were in the process of drafting presentations and hoped for mediation. The State has yet to announce how it will proceed with the matter.
