Manenberg shooting claimed the lives of two men after gunfire erupted in Thames Avenue early on Thursday morning. Police confirmed that officers registered two counts of murder following the incident, which occurred at about 7am in the Manenberg area, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the victims were men aged 50 and 53. Both were shot multiple times in the upper body and were declared dead at the scene. Emergency services responded shortly after reports of gunfire but could not save the men.
‘The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,’ media liaison officer Captain F.C Van Wyk told Cape {town} Etc in a statement.
Police said detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and have opened two murder dockets. At this stage, the motive for the attack remains unclear and forms part of the ongoing investigation.
The shooting adds to continued concerns about gun violence in parts of Cape Town, where communities such as Manenberg are often affected by serious crime. Police have urged residents to assist investigations by coming forward with information that could help identify those responsible.
