The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed that Pollsmoor prisoner Yanga Wayithi was re-arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo, Wayithi’s brazen three-day escape was halted at approximately 1:30am by a swift coordinated law enforcement operation.
‘He is now back in custody at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre and will face additional charges related to his escape from lawful custody,’ said Nxumalo.
National Commissioner of Correctional Services Makgothi Thobakgale commended the swift action of the officials involved in the coordinated operation, saying the arrest reaffirms the department’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the correctional system.
‘We remain resolute in ensuring that all offenders are held accountable, and that public safety is our top priority,’ said Thobakgale. ‘A full-scale investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape.’
The commissioner added that appropriate measures will also be taken against any lapses identified during the investigation.
‘Additionally, protocols at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre are under review to prevent similar incidents in the future,’ concluded Thobakgale.
This afternoon the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed that an inmate, a 35-year-old man named Yanga Wayithi, escaped from Pollsmoor Correctional Centre, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The inmate was serving a six-month sentence on charges of theft and trespassing.
During his time in the correctional centre, Wayithi was assigned to work in a team responsible for maintaining the facility’s grounds.
SAPS has been alerted of the escape and a case of escape from lawful custody has been opened.
Additionally, the department’s tracing team is actively working to ensure a swift arrest.
An internal investigation has also been launched to determine the circumstances of the inmate’s escape.
The DCS has warned the public that they are to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities while the inmate remains at large.
