The incident, which occurred shortly after 19:15, unfolded in a residence where emergency services discovered the deceased: an 80-year-old woman, a 44-year-old woman, a 47-year-old man, and a 37-year-old man.
Each victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds, with severe injuries primarily focused on the head, chest, and upper body.
According to Ian Cameroon, chairperson of the Police Portfolio Committee, law enforcement officials responded promptly but were met with a grim scene. ‘The victims were found scattered across two double beds and the floor, each a testament to what police believe to be a troubling link to local gang activities,’
Evidence suggests that two male suspects, believed to be involved in the shooting, escaped the scene in a white Volkswagen Polo, although no registration number was recorded.
Cameroon condemned the shooting as a reflection of the ongoing systemic failures within the South African Police Service (SAPS) to effectively combat gang violence in the area.
‘This tragic incident exposes ongoing systemic failures in SAPS’s approach to gang violence in the Western Cape and underlines the urgent need for intelligence-led, professional investigations and proper resourcing of crime intelligence and detective services,’ he stated.
He further elaborated on the concerns surrounding the police’s handling of the situation, citing deficiencies in multi-disciplinary response efforts, intelligence-led analysis, and territorial conflict mapping.
With these failures laid bare, calls for reform and enhanced policing techniques in neighbourhoods plagued by gang activity have grown louder.
