A major search operation is under way at Bakoven after an 18-year-old from Delft disappeared in the early hours of Saturday morning, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Emergency services were called to the scene after reports that a group of young adults had been on the rocks when the teenager went missing. Authorities suspect he may have slipped into the ocean during the incoming high tide.
Teams from the SA Police Service’s Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS), City of Cape Town Law Enforcement, WC Government Health EMS Metro Rescue, and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) rushed to the scene. NSRI Bakoven duty controllers confirmed that their Gemini Legend rescue craft was launched to join the operation.
Shoreline patrols and searches of the surrounding rocks revealed no trace of the teen. As the hours passed, it became increasingly likely that he had been swept into the water.
The rescue mission has included extensive air, sea and land searches, with an EMS Metro Rescue drone unit and NSRI Bakoven rescue swimmers scouring the area alongside police divers.
Despite the large-scale effort, the teenager remains missing and police have opened an investigation while the search continues.
Authorities have urged the public to stay clear of the search area as crews maintain their round-the-clock operation to locate the missing Delft youth.
