A Grade 12 pupil at Reddam House Atlantic Seaboard has been expelled following allegations of extortion from her peers.
Her mother is now struggling to find a new school where she can complete her matric year.
As reported by Cape Argus, Reddam House spokesperson Shelley Carroll stated that the expulsion followed multiple complaints from students and their families about the pupil’s actions.
The girl’s mother claims her daughter had been collecting money from classmates to support their family, raising R5 000 during the first term before her expulsion.
She alleges that their financial difficulties had left them struggling to afford basic necessities, with some nights spent without food.
Believing her daughter was trying to help in the only way she knew how, the mother has since been searching for a government school willing to admit her, but without success.
Many schools are reluctant to accept matric pupils so late in the academic year, particularly those with an expulsion record.
Reddam House has defended its decision, stating that the pupil’s actions violated the school’s code of conduct.
