Mel and Peet Viljoen were arrested in Boca Raton on 10 March 2026 after police linked them to an alleged six-month ticket-switching scheme that left a Publix with about $5 302 in unpaid groceries, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to People, Investigators say surveillance footage and an arrest affidavit show the couple scanning cheaper barcodes while taking higher-priced items at self-checkout tills between August 2025 and March 2026.
If proven, the alleged ticket-switching scheme involving Melany Viljoen and Petrus Viljoen could qualify as second-degree grand theft under Florida Statutes.

Police stopped the couple during a traffic stop because their vehicle matched one shown repeatedly in store recordings, and officers booked them on aggravated grand retail theft charges under Florida law (WPBF).
A police affidavit describes the method known as ticket switching and says Petrus often distracted staff while Melany scanned lower-priced barcodes.
When questioned, Melany told officers she ‘acted alone’ and was in ‘survival mode’ because she lacked work authorisation in the US, according to police reports. Petrus denied intentional theft when shown footage, detectives say.
Prosecutors will decide whether to pursue further charges as the Palm Beach County investigation continues.
