A quiet afternoon turned to horror in Mfuleni on Wednesday, 30 July, when a 17-year-old schoolboy was shot and killed in a brazen attack just steps from his school, Cape {town} Etc reports.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the teenager was ambushed by a lone gunman around 3:10pm, moments after dismissal.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos as the assailant fired five bullets into the victim’s head and chest, a deliberate act of brutality that sent pupils sprinting back into the schoolyard.
‘The shooter showed no mercy,’ recounted a local resident, who asked to remain anonymous.
Panicked students phoned parents following tears, while teachers scrambled to secure the premises.
Captain Frederick Van Wyk, SAPS spokesperson, confirmed that officers arrived by 3:15pm to find the boy dead at the scene. Medical personnel pronounced no signs of life.
While the motive remains unclear, community leaders like Mvano Magula of the Mfuleni Community Police Forum voiced outrage: ‘Parents send children to school for education, not to be buried.’
Local NGOs are mobilising trauma counselling for affected students.
