The Atlantis Magistrates Court convened on Thursday to hear the latest developments in the murder of 41-year-old Malcolm Pather. Stacey Lee Hector, Wade van Reenen, Kyle Francis, Igshaan Abrahams and Courtney Nortjie formally withdrew their bail applications and opted to remain in custody, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The accused face Schedule 6 charges of murder in terms of common purpose, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice. Court officials granted permission for photographs of the defendants before proceedings began, underscoring the case’s high public interest (Cape Argus).
Pather, originally from Durban, went missing on 13 July after leaving his home in Richwood, Table View. His mobile phone switched off that evening. The following day, investigators discovered his body, severely burned beyond recognition, at the back of a bakkie in Melkbosstrand.
Police confirmed the vehicle had been stolen in Goodwood between 12 and 13 July and burnt twice, first empty and then with a body inside (Cape Times).
Detectives relied on crime-scene photographs, witness statements and video footage from Mitchells Plain to trace the suspects. Hector was arrested in Table View on 25 July and van Reenen at the Cape Town Magistrates Court on 28 July, facing separate drug charges.
Francis, aged 41, was detained in Mitchells Plain on 30 July, while Abrahams and Nortjie were arrested in Sea Point on 1 August.
Prosecutors had prepared to oppose bail, citing concerns of witness interference. With the accused choosing to stay in custody, the court postponed the matter to 29 September for continuation of the investigation. Key outstanding items include the post-mortem report, toxicology results and additional witness statements.
Pather’s funeral took place on 2 August in Chatsworth. He is survived by a minor child. The South African Police Service appeals to anyone with further information to come forward.

Update: Couple charged in brutal killing of Malcolm Pather

Stacey Lee Hector and Wade van Reenen, both 39, appeared in the Atlantis Magistrates Court this week facing serious charges, including murder, kidnapping, and obstruction of justice.
The case comes following the death of Malcolm Pather (41), whose charred remains were discovered inside a burnt-out vehicle on Old Mamre Darling Road near Melkbosstrand on 14 July.
According to officials, Pather was last seen leaving his Richwood home on 13 July in a blue BMW 1 Series. His phone was switched off that evening, and while his car was later recovered in Mitchells Plain, he remained missing. Reports suggest Pather had arranged to meet Hector in Table View before his disappearance, allegedly walking into a trap where he was ambushed and extorted.
Captain FC van Wyk of the South African Police Service confirmed that the body found was ‘completely burned,’ requiring meticulous forensic work to identify the remains. Investigators reportedly used video footage to track down a suspect linked to Pather’s stolen vehicle.
Sources also indicate that a bakkie, stolen in Goodwood between 12-13 July, was set alight twice, first empty, then with a body inside. This evidence reportedly led authorities to the accused.
Hector was initially set to appear in court on 28 July but was hospitalised following an alleged suicide attempt. When she finally appeared alongside van Reenen, the two were seen exchanging whispers and affectionate gestures as they were escorted back to holding cells.
The prosecution has announced plans to oppose bail, citing concerns that the accused may interfere with witnesses. Van Reenen reportedly has a prior drug-related conviction, further complicating their case. The bail hearing is scheduled for 4 August, with both remaining in custody.
Police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward.
The case has sent shockwaves through the community, with investigators piecing together a disturbing sequence of events. The upcoming bail hearing will be a critical moment in determining whether the accused remains behind bars as the case progresses.
The search for Malcolm Pather, a Cape Farms resident who went missing earlier this month, has ended in tragedy, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Pather, who lived along Rooiheuwel Road, was last seen on Sunday, 13 July 2025. He had reportedly left his residence driving a blue 2017 BMW and had not been seen or heard from since.
It is believed that his cellphone was switched off on the same day, sparking concern from loved ones and community members.
While his vehicle was later recovered in Mitchells Plain, there was no sign of Pather at the time, and the search effort intensified over the following days.
On Monday, 28 July, it was confirmed that Pather had been found deceased.
According to police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk, his brother-in-law reported his disappearance on Tuesday, 15 July.
‘On Monday, 14 July, at 1:20am, Melkbosstrand SAPS were notified of a burning body on the back of an already burnt vehicle in Old Mamre Darling Road, Melkbosstrand. The body of a male found was burnt beyond recognition,’ said Van Wyk.
‘All leads were followed up on evidence found on the crime scene and a possible person of interest was identified.’
Van Wyk added that the address of the suspects were identified on Friday, 27 July, and a 39-year-old woman was taken in for questioning.
‘After she was arrested, she was admitted to hospital after a suicide attempt and remained in custody.’
On Monday, 28 July, a 39-year-old male was arrested at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court and both suspects were charged and are expected to appear at the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 30 July.
The duo face a charge of murder, with the possibility of additional charges being added.
In a statement shared with the community, Pather’s loved ones expressed their heartfelt gratitude to everyone, including SAPS, local search-and-rescue teams and community members, who assisted during the difficult days of uncertainty and supported the family throughout.
