A week of fear and frantic searching ended in relief as 10-year-old Reamohetse Lekgetha, who vanished without a trace in Delft, has been found and is now back home safely.
The young boy’s disappearance on 18 July sent shockwaves through the Cape Town community, triggering an intense manhunt by both police and local residents. Reamohetse had left his home that afternoon to visit friends in nearby Voorbrug, a familiar routine during the school holidays. But when he didn’t return by nightfall, his family knew something was wrong.
According to his mother, the day had started like any other. Reamohetse spent time with his grandmother and later dropped off some clothes at home before heading out again. At around 4pm, he told his mother someone had given him R5 and that he was going to play. That would be the last time she saw him until his unexpected return.
Reports from neighbourhood children added to the confusion. Some claimed to have seen Reamohetse running toward Wesbank while allegedly being chased and assaulted by another boy. Despite community tip-offs and scattered sightings, his whereabouts remained a mystery for days.
This wasn’t the first time the boy had gone missing during school holidays. His mother admitted that he’s had a pattern of disappearing but was usually seen around the area and would eventually come home or be spotted by neighbours.
What remains unclear is where Reamohetse spent the past several days and who may have been with him. Authorities have yet to confirm any details about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance or return, and the investigation is likely ongoing.
The family, while still shaken, is relieved to have their son back, safe and unharmed, as Smile FM reports.
