Mitchells Plain cat killings are under investigation after the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS SA) appealed to the public for information following the discovery of several dead cats in Harmony Village, Mitchells Plain, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The organisation says the incidents have left residents distressed and is urging anyone with information to come forward. According to an AWS SA statement, inspectors recovered several of the murdered cats.
The welfare organisation said the cats were found with multiple deep puncture wounds that appear consistent with dog bites. Investigators are exploring whether the animals were deliberately attacked by dogs or used as bait for fighting dogs. Formal forensic post-mortem examinations are underway to determine the exact cause of death and gather further evidence.
The organisation said the cats’ bodies were found near a children’s play park close to Pinecliff and Fawn Roads. Inspectors believe the location may have been chosen to cause fear and distress within the community.
‘This was not a random act. It was calculated, deliberate and exceptionally cruel,’ the Animal Welfare Society said in its public appeal.
AWS SA has asked anyone who has lost a cat, witnessed suspicious activity or has information that could assist investigators to contact Inspector Sivuyile Kilwa or Inspector Crystal Fester on 021 692 2626 or 082 601 1761.
The organisation said community assistance could prove vital in identifying those responsible and preventing further incidents.
The case has drawn comparisons with the 2021 Manenberg cat killings. During that investigation, Animal Welfare Society spokesperson Allan Perrins said: ‘There has been a marked increase in animal stabbings,’ adding that inspectors were working closely with authorities to identify those responsible.
