The Western Cape’s Department of Health has closed down one of the province’s most dedicated COVID-19 field hospitals, the Mitchells Plain Hospital of Hope.
The immediate closure of the facility comes after the province officially exited the COVID-19 fourth wave as new cases have been decreasing below 600.
According to the Premier of the Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, the Hospital of Hope currently has zero patients, however, should it be necessary the province would bring additional infrastructure online to ensure the healthcare system is fully capacitated.
Winde said the province is also seeing an average of 18 deaths per day from 31 based on a seven-day moving average from last week.
“We are seeing a continued decrease in new COVID-19 cases, hospital admissions and COVID-19 test positivity, showing us that we have exited the fourth wave,” Winde indicated.
