The Mitchell’s Plain Regional Court sentenced 24-year-old Kirk Daniels to 20 years in prison for murder on Friday, 30 May 2025, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The ruling came after a complex investigation revealed Daniels as the perpetrator of a fatal shooting that has rattled the community of Tafelsig.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile expressed gratitude towards the investigative team and prosecutors responsible for building a compelling case against Daniels.
He lauded the hard work and dedication of the authorities, particularly highlighting the role of detective Sgt Bradley Schuurman from the Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit.
The ordeal began on Wednesday, 13 November 2019, when police were called to Lemoenshoek Street in Tafelsig, where a 35-year-old man fell victim to gun violence, reportedly from a rival gang member.
‘As investigations unfolded, leads pointed towards Daniels as the suspect, culminating in his apprehension shortly thereafter,’ Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie said.
Pojie said, ‘Officers from the visible policing unit intercepted Daniels while he was driving in Kilomanjaro Street, Tafelsig. During the stop, authorities discovered a loaded firearm alongside drugs in his vehicle. Subsequent ballistic tests confirmed that the weapon in question was indeed the one used in the fatal attack.’
In addition to his murder sentence, the court imposed an additional ten years for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as three years for drug possession.
However, the magistrate stipulated that this sentence would commence only after the completion of an existing sentence Daniels is currently serving for another murder committed in April 2019, also in Mitchell’s Plain.
