Police in the Western Cape has confirmed that more than 100 bodies were found in a truck on the N2 near Somerset West on Saturday, September 11.
According to News 24, traffic officials reportedly stopped and searched a truck on the N2 weighbridge and made the gruesome discovery of 106 bodies, believed to be COVID-19 related.
However, the driver was in possession of a permit to transport the bodies, as the truck was en route to the Eastern Cape. The spokesperson for the Western Cape’s Health Department Mark van der Heever said that the undertaker was then allowed to continue his journey, as they don’t anticipate any risk to the public.
Van der Heever added that the department is waiting for confirmation as to whether corpses found were COVID-19 -related deaths, SABC reported.
Meanwhile, police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut indicated that the SAPS are currently investigating the incident.
