In the early hours of this morning, commuters were met with disruption on the Central Line as a serious incident unfolded at Philippi Station. At approximately 7:49am, a vehicle collided with Train 9904, which was en route to Nyanga.
The chaos that ensued has prompted Metrorail Western Cape to reiterate the importance of caution when approaching level crossings, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to reports from the train crew, the incident began when the train driver saw the vehicle approaching the crossing and promptly sounded the warning horn.
Despite this alert, the vehicle proceeded onto the crossing, resulting in a collision that halted train services in the area, and reports have suggested that no one was injured.
Metrorail Western Cape stated, ‘Due to the occurrence, train services on the Central Line have been disrupted, with trains being turned back at Nyanga station.’
Emergency teams were quickly dispatched to the scene, where they initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
In light of the incident, Metrorail Western Cape has addressed a significant concern for motorists and pedestrians alike.
‘Trains by nature appear to be moving slowly at a distance, leading to miscalculations in speed, however, they are in fact moving fast and are unable to make sudden stops,’ they explained.
The train service has since been restored, with trains now operating according to their regular schedule. Still, the announcement serves as a stark reminder for all road users to remain vigilant when approaching level crossings, an area marked by the presence of warning signals and barriers.
Metrorail Western Cape calls on all motorists to practice extreme caution and ensure they adhere to all safety warnings.
