A Kommetjie resident has raised alarm after Google Maps reportedly rerouted several motorists through Philippi when the N2 highway was closed this past weekend, Cape {town} Etc reports.
According to the resident, multiple cars were targeted on Saturday while driving through the area. Attackers allegedly slashed tyres and hurled solid objects at vehicles, smashing windows and causing damage. Though she managed to escape unharmed, her car was left battered.
The incident has sparked fresh concern over the risks of relying blindly on GPS navigation apps during road closures.
Motorists are urged to:
- Check routes manually before driving, especially if GPS apps reroute you due to traffic or road closures.
- Zoom out on maps to see the full route.
- Send live locations to friends or family members.
- Monitor local traffic groups and radio reports for real-time updates.
With the N2 frequently impacted by protests and safety concerns, authorities and community members are reminding drivers to remain vigilant and informed before taking to the road.
