A deliveryman from popular online food delivery service Mr D Food has been arrested for the alleged rape of a 26-year-old female customer.

According to a statement from the South African Police Services (SAPS), a rape case was opened on July 5. “A 43-year-old man was arrested yesterday [Monday] afternoon and he is expected to appear in court once charged,” Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said.

CEO of Mr D Food, Devon Sinclair, said in a statement, “Mr D Food is deeply concerned about an incident that occurred involving one of our customers in the course of a delivery on the evening of July 5. We take this matter very seriously and strongly condemn any act of crime or violence.”

As reported by IOL, the customer allowed the deliveryman into her Wynberg home in order to fetch cash to pay him. He allegedly cornered her in a passage of her home and proceeded to rape her. He then reportedly fled by kicking down the security gate she had locked behind them.

“As soon as we were alerted to the incident, action was taken and the driver was immediately suspended by the franchise. A thorough internal investigation was conducted that led to the immediate termination of the driver’s contract and the driver being handed over to the SAPS,” Sinclair said.

“We remain in contact with the family involved and have offered our continued support. We continue to work closely with the SAPS on this matter and are providing all necessary information to assist with their investigation. We would like to assure our customers that we have zero tolerance for any criminal activity and their safety remains our priority,” he added.
