Mr Price has recently announced a new product dubbed ‘period panties’, offering a different kind of feminine-hygiene product from tampons and pads.
The period panties look like normal underwear but are designed to absorb fluid and moisture, keeping things dry downstairs owed to their leak-resistant technology. The retailer says that one doesn’t need to use extra sanitary products either. Further, their design entails odour control and flexibility.
They’re made to be washed and reused, cutting the costs of the continuous cycle of expensive sanitary-product purchases that numerous women in South Africa can’t afford. Global Citizen noted that in recent years, 3.7 million girls were unable to access menstrual hygiene products.
Period poverty, which is defined as the lack of access to sanitary products and hygiene facilities to manage menstruation, is painstakingly apparent in South Africa.
While Mr Price’s innovative product retails at R149.99, their longevity is really what lightens the financial flow from continuous buying. Additionally, the added bonus is the sustainability of the period panties that combats the disposable products that are for the most part, not eco-friendly.
It’s something that all period-endurers can give a try for a different approach to the red-devil era of the month.
While some women are still sceptical about the new product and if it works the way it says it does, others have praised it.
“Getting period products to be more accessible is [the] right step in the right direction,” said Candice Chirwa AKA the ‘Minister of Menstruation’ on Titter.
“Mr Price period panties look so comfy, imma try them out,” said another user.
“Those period panties tsa Mr Price? Brilliant idea,” another user praised before allocating the pros, including functional benefit, perceived affordability and convenience/ emotional benefit as some of the right box-checks.
