Cape Town’s beloved Muizenberg Beach is getting a facelift, and if all goes to plan, parts of the revamped area could be ready for locals and tourists as early as August.
The City of Cape Town has confirmed that upgrades to the Muizenberg beachfront are steaming ahead, with construction crews currently working across multiple sections of the promenade.
This multi-million rand project, aimed at rejuvenating one of the Mother City’s most iconic coastlines, is part of a broader plan to boost coastal infrastructure and improve climate resilience, as reported by Smile FM.
Jason Love, the Executive Support Officer to the deputy mayor and mayoral committee member for Spatial Planning and Environment, revealed that major groundwork is underway. A realigned stormwater pipeline is being installed at Surfer’s Corner, and the complex construction of a new coastal revetment has begun at the entrance to the St James walkway.
Love also confirmed that the parking area in front of the Muizenberg Civic Centre, located on the western side, is undergoing foundational layer work. This part of the beachfront may be open to the public by 1 August 2025, weather permitting. ‘Winter always brings a wildcard,’ he said. ‘Working in zones where tides and wave surges hit hard is no small feat, especially when storms and high winds batter the coast.’
Deputy Mayor and Mayco Member Alderman Eddie Andrews echoed the significance of the ongoing works, describing the Muizenberg Beachfront Refurbishment Project as an essential intervention to combat rising sea levels and erosion.
‘This upgrade includes the replacement of worn-out seawalls and public infrastructure, helping to secure the future of this coastline,’ said Andrews. ‘We’re not just rebuilding, we’re building better.’

The restoration is being rolled out in phases over two years, with the first phase having kicked off back in February 2025. That initial stretch covers areas around Surfer’s Corner and the now-closed gravel parking lot near the railway line.
Meanwhile, residents and stakeholders will have a chance to get the latest updates directly from officials. A public liaison meeting will be held at The Lookout in Zandvlei on Tuesday, 17 June 2025, from 5:30pm to 7pm. The City is encouraging all interested locals to attend and have their say.
Despite minor setbacks, like delays on the eastern parking zone, the City remains confident that Muizenberg will soon unveil a beachfront that blends its rich heritage with modern functionality. With peak summer months just around the corner, this upgrade couldn’t come at a better time.
