A 41-year-old general assistant from the Knysna Local Municipality was arrested on June 4, 2025, by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team, Cape {town} Etc reports.
This arrest, which occurred at the suspect’s workplace, stems from allegations of bribery involving unfulfilled job promises made to two unsuspecting members of the public.
According to Western Cape Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Zinzi Hani, the accused is facing serious charges after it was revealed that he allegedly took a total of R37 500 from two individuals between September 2019 and November 2021.
‘The case accusations specify that one victim paid R30 000 while the other was defrauded of R7 500,’ Hani said.
In an unfortunate turn of events for the victims, both individuals never received the employment opportunities that had been promised in exchange for their payments.
Warrant Officer Hani emphasised the severe implications of the suspect’s actions, stating, ‘The victims, through the suspect’s criminal activity, suffered a loss in the amount of R37 500 and did not receive employment as promised.’
This incident shines a light on rampant issues of corruption within public offices and underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to crack down on unethical practices in local government.
Hani added that the suspect is scheduled to make his appearance in court on June 5, 2025, where the full extent of the accusations will be formally addressed.
